Enzo Vecciarelli (born May 13, 1957 in Colleferro near Rome ) is a general in the Italian Air Force . He has been Chief of Staff of the Italian Armed Forces since November 2018 .

Life

Military background

Vecciarelli graduated from the Accademia Aeronautica from 1975 to 1979 . He received his training as a fighter pilot in Laughlin ( Texas ) and at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico . As such, he served mainly at 4º Stormo in Grosseto in Tuscany until 2002 . There he flew F-104S Starfighter and finally commanded the 9th Fighter Squadron and from 1999 to 2002 the 4th Squadron.

From 1993 to 1999 Vecciarelli served in the Air Force General Staff in Rome, where he was responsible for personnel and organizational matters in the 1st staff department as head of department and division. From 2002 to 2004 he worked for the staff of the logistics command, most recently as deputy chief of staff. This use was interrupted by a foreign assignment in Iraq , where he took over the leadership of an Italian contingent in Tallil near Nasiriya . From 2004 to 2007 he was Deputy Head of Department and representative of Italy at the European Defense Agency (EDA) and the Joint Organization for Armaments Cooperation (OCCAR) in the Defense Ministry in Rome . He then served until 2010 at the Italian embassy in Berlin as a defense and air force attaché ; as such he was also accredited in the Netherlands and Denmark .

Back in Italy, Vecciarelli was in 2010 commander of the combat units of the Air Fleet Command and in 2011 Chief of the Staff of the Air Fleet Command in Rome. From 2012 to 2015 he was department head in the armaments department of the Ministry of Defense, where he was mainly responsible for coordinating international armaments programs. From February 2015 to March 2016 he was Deputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces and then until October 31, 2018 Chief of Staff of the Italian Air Force. In December 2017 he also became a member of the executive committee of the civil aircraft accident investigation authority ANSV .

On October 25, 2018, the Italian government designated him as the new Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces. Vecciarelli took over this post on November 5, 2018 from Army General Claudio Graziano .

Enzo Vecciarelli has as part of its officer training a college degree of the University of Naples Federico II obtained and later a Master of Advanced Studies in International Relations at the University of Trieste . He completed general staff courses at the Scuola di Guerra Aerea in Florence , at the Air Warfare College of the Air University at Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base in the USA, the Defense Resource Management Course at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterrey, California and the Session Européenne des Responsables d 'Armement (SERA) at the École militaire in Paris .

Private

Vecciarelli is married and has a son and a daughter.
