Leonīds Kalniņš (born February 13, 1957 in Tomsk Oblast ) is a Latvian officer with the rank of lieutenant general . Since January 2017 he has been the military commander of the national armed forces of his home country.

Life

Leonīds Kalniņš was born in 1957 in Pervomaiski Raion, Tomsk Oblast, in what was then the Russian SFSR . His school education took place from 1964 to 1975 in Dobele .

Military career

After finishing school, Kalniņš began his military training. In the next few years he attended military academies in Vilnius (1975–79) and Kharkov (1987–90).

After the restoration of Latvia's independence and the termination of his service in the Red Army , Kalniņš initially worked in the civil service in Dobele from 1991. In 1997 he joined the Latvian National Guard ( Latvian Zemessardze ) and was entrusted there with various tasks with the 51st Battalion until 2003. In 2003 he switched to the training area of ​​the national armed forces and in 2005 to operational planning of the land forces . In the same year he was transferred to the headquarters of the Zemessardze and worked there in various posts (most recently as chief of staff). In the meantime, in 2006 he was also deputy commander of the Latvian contingent in Iraq. From 2010 to 2011 he completed postgraduate studies at Command and General Staff College in the USA. On October 15, 2011, he was appointed Commander of the National Guard. In 2013 Leonīds Kalniņš attended the Higher Command Studies Course at the Baltic Defense College and was promoted to Brigadier General in August 2014 .

In the rank of general, he remained in the post of commander of the National Guard for two years. On August 26, 2016, he moved to the headquarters of the armed forces and took over the post of chief of staff. Kalniņš was promoted to major general in November 2016 and elected military commander of the armed forces by the Latvian parliament on December 22 of the same year , succeeding Raimonds Graube . The official handover took place on January 27, 2017 and the promotion to lieutenant general on July 26, 2017.

Private

The general is married. In addition to his mother tongue, he is also fluent in English and Russian.
