The Baltic Defense Academy ( BALTDEFCOL , English Baltic Defense College ) is a western-oriented military training center in the Baltic States .
BALTDEFCOL was founded in 1999 in Tartu ( Estonia ). The military academy has the task of producing staff officers of the Baltic republics. The tasks of the academy also include expanding and systematically transferring specialist skills to BALTDEFCOL participants.
Efforts are being made to put the Baltic states in a position to carry out higher military training for their armed forces at home.

The teaching staff comes from Germany , France , the Scandinavian countries, Switzerland and the United States . An international staff of professional officers serves as the teaching staff.
The project is supported by western countries, including the USA , Sweden , Norway and Finland . It is coordinated by Sweden and the Baltic Security Assistance Group ( BALTSEA ). Sweden plays the leading role among the aid countries. The Switzerland , for example, supported the Academy with instructors from the Center for Information and Communication of the Army (CICA) and led with the students on site, a communications and media training by. On the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) of November 19, 1998, Switzerland made an annual contribution of € 52,000.

General staff courses are offered at the academy. At the same time, the course is offered to senior officers and civilian employees of the defense ministries. The topics are u. a. Overall defense , mobilization and international martial law , peacebuilding and security cooperation. Among other things, NATO standards are also taught. The language of instruction is English . Officers and civil employees of the three Baltic states, NATO / EU states and NATO PfP states can take part in the following courses:
- Joint Command and General Staff Course (JCGSC)
- Higher Command Studies Course (HCSC)
- Civil Servants Course (CSC)
Commanders
The first commander of BALTDEFCOL was Brigadier General MH Clemmesen, a member of the Danish Army , who resigned from his post in December 2004. The post will now alternate between the three Baltic states.

In May 2005 the first commander of the BALTDEFCOL was awarded the St Germain Gold Medal of the Danish Military Society for his services to the establishment and operation of the academy .
