Algis Vaičeliūnas (born November 13, 1964 in Panevėžys ) is a Lithuanian brigadier general ret . D., who was most recently in command of the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy . He has been a member of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania ( LSDP ) since December 2018 .

Life

Algis Vaičeliūnas was born in Panevėžys, in the north of what was then the Lithuanian SSR in 1964 .

Military career

From 1983 to 1986 Vaičeliūnas attended the Aviation Military Technology School in Kaliningrad and was trained as a radio technician. After graduation, he served in the Red Army and from 1988 to 1990 completed a distance learning course at the University of Military Aviation Engineering in Riga.

After the country regained its independence, he joined the Lithuanian army and went through various assignments and training courses over the next few years. From 1994 to 1996 he attended a postgraduate course at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg and in 1998 a course on change management at the European Center for George C. Marshall Security Studies in Germany. From 2000 to 2003 he was in command of the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy. In the following year he passed his own Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration exam there.

On November 23, 2004, Vaičeliūnas was given the rank of brigadier general by President Valdas Adamkus . In December 2004 he was appointed Commander of the Baltic Defense Academy ( BALTDEFCOL ). After leaving this office, he was appointed Chief of Staff in April 2008, until he was replaced by Vilmantas Tamošaitis in 2011 . In the following years he worked as a representative of his home country at the headquarters of the Allied Forces in Europe ( SHAPE ). From 2015 to 2017 he was Inspector General in the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense . On April 19, 2017, he once again took command of the Lithuanian Military Academy and held it until he was transferred to the reserve on November 23, 2018.

Private

Algis Vaičeliūnas is married and has two sons. In addition to his mother tongue, he is also proficient in Russian, English and German.

His hobbies are cycling, playing tennis and jogging, and reading philosophical books. Vaičeliūnas is also a former boxer.
