The Lithuanian Military Academy General Jonas Žemaitis ( lit. Generolo Jono Žemaičio Lietuvos karo akademija ) is a military academy in Vilnius , Lithuania . The university is located in the Antakalnis district .
History and naming
The General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy was founded in 1992 as a training facility for officers as part of the reconstruction of the Lithuanian armed forces . Together with the Divisional General Stasys Raštikis Military School (the Lithuanian NCO School), it stands in the tradition of the Kaunas War School and the Vytautas Magnus Military School , both of which existed until 1940.
The facility was named after Jonas Žemaitis-Vytautas (1909–1954), commander in chief of the armed forces of the Lithuanian resistance, in the rank of brigadier general. He was also posthumously recognized as the de facto President of Lithuania .
