The Supreme Commander is the President of the Republic of Lithuania , who can directly order mobilization , a state of defense or a state of emergency in the event of a crisis . The Ministry of Defense is the highest command of the Lithuanian armed forces . Defense Minister is Raimundas Karoblis - directly subordinate to him is the military commander in chief of the armed forces, currently Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas .

history

On March 23, 1990, the Lithuanian Parliament (lit. Lietuvos Respublikos Aukščiausioji Taryba ) planned to set up an institution for state defense while it proposed the candidacies for ministers to the Lithuanian government. The candidate was Deputy Vidmantas Povilionis .

On April 25, 1990, the Lithuanian government founded the Department for National Defense (lit. Krašto apsaugos departamentas ). On October 10, 1991, Parliament appointed the Lithuanian Minister of Defense Audrius Butkevičius .

On October 16, 1991, the Department of National Defense was dissolved after it had done its job. A new unit (structure) for the national defense was only confirmed by the Lithuanian Defense Minister on February 3, 1992 (by resolution No. 49), although the officials for the national defense had already been selected and had started their service. In November 1999, the new ministry's legal department was established.

On November 10, 2000, Linas Linkevičius was appointed Minister of Defense (Jonas Gečas, Povilas Malakauskas and Valdemaras Sarapinas were appointed as Deputy Ministers).

A reorganization was carried out in January 2001. At that time the public relations and NATO departments were created . The administration department, the departments for international relations, resources and programs, defense policy and planning have been restructured.
