Juozas Olekas

Juozas Olekas (born October 30, 1955 in Bolshoi Ungut , Krasnoyarsk Region , Russia ) is a Lithuanian social democratic politician , former doctor ( microsurgeon ) and long-term Seimas member. He has been a member of the European Parliament since July 2019 .

Life

From 1974 to 1980 Olekas completed his medical studies in Kaunas and Vilnius . He then worked as a senior physician at the Vilnius University Hospital until 1988 . From 1982 to 1989 he was also a research assistant in the Laboratory for Microsurgery at the University of Vilnius (VU) and received his doctorate there in 1987. Subsequently, if his political commitment allowed him, he held various positions at the Vilnius University Hospital.

politics

Olekas has been a member of the Lithuanian Parliament since 1996 . From 1990 to 1992 and again from 2003 to 2004 he was Minister of Health of Lithuania . In the cabinet of Gediminas Kirkilas he took over the office of defense minister from 2006 to 2008 . After the new elections in 2012, he took over this office again in December 2012 in the new government under Algirdas Butkevičius . From 2015 he was also deputy party chairman of the LSDP , one of the deputies of Algirdas Butkevičius.

When the LSDP split over the question of continuing participation in the government, Olekas remained on the side of the new party leadership and took over the chairmanship of the rump LSDP parliamentary group in November 2017. Since the European elections in Lithuania in 2019 , he has been one of two representatives of his party in Brussels.
