Meelis Kiili (born March 20, 1965 ) is an Estonian officer with the rank of major general . From 2012 to 2019 he was the commandant of the Defense Union ( Estonian : Kaitseliit ).

Life

Before starting his military career, Meelis Kiili studied at the Estonian University of Environmental Sciences from 1984 to 1991 . In the following years he worked as an engineer until 1993.

Military career

Promotions

Meelis Kiili joined the Estonian Armed Forces in their reconstruction in the 1990s. He has been a member of the Kaitseliit since 1993 . In 1996/1997 he led the Estonian contingent in southern Lebanon.

From 2005 to 2006 he was Chief of Staff and Acting Commander of the Estonian Army , and from 2006 to 2007 Deputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces. In addition to his practical work, he also attended events at the Baltic Defense Academy (1999/2000) and the NATO Defense College (2006/2007) for further training . From 2008 to 2010 he was a military attaché in the United States and Canada, during which time he attended postgraduate studies at the United States Army War College . In June 2009, Kiili was promoted to colonel and in October 2010 to brigadier general.

Two months after being promoted to general rank, he was appointed commander of the Baltic Defense Academy. After resigning from this position, he became the commander of the Kaitseliit in December 2012 . He was promoted to major general in May 2017. In July 2019, he was replaced by Riho Ühtegi as commandant of the Defense Union . Killi then worked as Estonia's representative at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe .

Private

Meelis Kiili is married and has two daughters. It was in May 2015 Russia with a travel ban occupied.
