Ilmar Tamm

Ilmar Tamm (born May 4, 1972 in Tartu ) is an Estonian officer with the rank of brigadier general . He is currently the commandant of the Baltic Defense Academy .

Life

Ilmar Tamm was born in 1972 in Tartu, the second largest city in what was then the Estonian SSR .

Military career

Tamm joined the Estonian Armed Forces in 1992 as a volunteer . After training as an officer in Finland, he first served in the staff and telecommunications battalion and left it in 1998 as its commander.

Over the next few years he served in various posts at the headquarters of the armed forces, completed postgraduate studies in Finland and a stay abroad in Germany. In 2007 he also served seven months at the ISAF headquarters in Kabul. From May 2008 he took over the management of the NATO Cooperative Cyber ​​Defense Center of Excellence . In August 2013, Ilmar Tamm was appointed Chief of Staff of the Kaitseliit , the Estonian National Guard. After five years in this post, he moved to the Baltic Defense Academy .

In June 2020 he was promoted to brigadier general and took over the management of the institute. As the successor to the Latvian Andis Dilāns , Tamm is the second Estonian commander of the academy, which is headed alternately by an officer from the Baltic states.

Private

Ilmar Tamm is married and has two grown daughters. His hobbies include mountain biking, science fiction books and salsa dancing.
