Andis Dilāns (born September 27, 1970 ) is an officer in the Latvian National Armed Forces currently with the rank of major general . From 2016 to 2020 he was the commandant of the Baltic Defense Academy .

Life

Andis Dilāns was born in 1970 in Ilūkste , in the southeast, in what was then the Latvian SSR .

The general is married and has one son. His hobbies include tennis and other outdoor sports .

Military career

Promotions

In 1992, Andis Dilāns joined the armed forces of his home country that were newly formed after Latvia regained independence . After numerous assignments and training courses at home and abroad, during which he had qualified for higher tasks, he took over the post of Chief of Staff of the Latvian Armed Forces until December 2012 .

While doing this, he was promoted to brigadier general on November 4, 2009 , and completed a master's degree at National Defense University in 2011 . After the end of his tenure as Chief of Staff, he became Latvia's military representative at NATO and the EU in 2013 . On August 11, 2014, he was promoted to major general. On August 8, 2016, he was appointed commander of the Baltic Defense Academy (BALTDEFCOL). He replaced Vitalijus Vaikšnoras there and was the second Latvian to the post, which is alternately filled by an officer from the Baltic states. In June 2020 he was followed by the Estonian Ilmar Tamm .
