Raimonds Graube (2015)

Raimonds Graube (born February 28, 1957 ) is a former Latvian officer with the rank of lieutenant general . From 1999 to 2003 and 2010 to 2017 he was the military commander of the National Armed Forces of his home country.

Life

Raimonds Graube was born in 1957 in Riga (then the capital of the Latvian SSR ).

The general is married and has two sons. In addition to his mother tongue, he is also fluent in Russian and English .

Military career

As part of Latvia's detachment from the Soviet Union, Graube joined the National Guard ( Zemessardze in Latvian ) in his home country in 1991 and received the rank of major there in 1993 . After various other tasks within the organization, he rose to Chief of Staff of the National Guard in 1995 and to its commanders in 1998 (with the rank of lieutenant colonel ). In 1999 he was appointed Colonel and Commander in Chief of the National Armed Forces. Three years later, he was promoted to brigadier general .

After the end of the four-year term at the head of the army, the Graube as was Secretary of State in the Ministry of Defense for the NATO integration of Latvia responsible. From there in 2008 he moved to the post of representative of the armed forces of his home country to NATO and the EU , but returned to the Ministry of Defense after just one year. In 2010 he took over the post of Commander in Chief of the Latvian Armed Forces and was promoted to major general. Two years later, he was promoted to lieutenant general. After being granted a third term as Army Commander in 2014, he asked for his early retirement in October 2016. On January 27, 2017, he was handed over to his successor Leonīds Kalniņš - on February 28, his 60th birthday, he was officially retired.

  • 2004–2005: National Defense University , Industrial College of the Armed Forces , USA
