Valdemaras Rupšys (born May 2, 1967 ) is a Lithuanian lieutenant general and since July 24, 2019 military commander in chief of the armed forces of his home country . He was previously the commander of the Lithuanian army .

Life

Valdemaras Rupšys was born in the district of Šiauliai , in the north of what was then the Lithuanian SSR .

Military career

The general has served in the Lithuanian armed forces since November 1, 1990. Between 1996 and 2005 he held leadership positions in various infantry units in the country. In 2006 he worked at the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy - in 2008 he moved to the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense . In 2011 he took command of the Geležinis Vilkas infantry brigade , promoted to colonel . Two years later he became the head of human resources in the Ministry of Defense.

In 2016, Rupšys was promoted to Brigadier General by Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė and on July 15, 2016, he was appointed as the new commander of the land forces, succeeding Almantas Leika . In this position he was promoted to major general on November 23, 2018 . In July 2019, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces by President Gitanas Nausėda (confirmed by Parliament on July 18 and ceremonially inducted into office on July 25). On this post he was promoted to lieutenant general in November 2019.

Private

The general is married and has two children. He is interested in history (especially military history) and cynology .
