Cynologist is not a protected professional title. There is no chair for cynology, but since October 2010 there has been a university course in applied cynology at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna . There are also scientists with a focus on cynology such as Dorit Feddersen-Petersen or Hansjoachim Hackbarth .

There are foundations to finance cynological research, such as the Albert Heim Foundation at the Natural History Museum in Bern and the Society for the Promotion of Cynological Research .

More recently, the English term canine science , 'dog science' or 'science of the dog' , has been used as an alternative term for cynology practiced in the university setting .
