Emil Eftimov

Emil Eftimov (born August 16, 1961 in Varna ) is a Bulgarian admiral and has been in command of the Bulgarian Armed Forces since 2020 .

Life

Emil Eftimov was born in 1961 in Varna, a port city on the Black Sea and the third largest city in Bulgaria.

Military career

Promotions

After graduating from high school in 1979, Emil Eftimov decided to serve in the Bulgarian Navy and attended the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in his hometown until 1984 .

After completing his training, he first served as a navigation officer (1984/1985), anti -submarine officer (1885–1988) and first officer (1888–1991) on board ships of the Bulgarian naval forces. In 1991 he was appointed commander of a ship. From 1992 to 1994 postgraduate studies at the Naval War Academy NG Kuznetsov in Saint Petersburg, Russia . After a year as an anti-submarine officer in a patrol ship unit, he became chief of staff of the 1st patrol squadron in Varna in 1995.

In this post, which he held until 2000, Eftimov was promoted to corvette captain in 1996. After a brief assignment as deputy chief of staff at the Varna naval base, he became the commander of the 1st patrol squadron in 2001. In the years 2003 to 2006 various uses followed in the training sector. From 2004 to 2005 he also attended postgraduate studies at Naval War College in Newport, USA . After his assignments in the training area, Eftimov was appointed chief of staff of the naval base in Varna in 2006.

In 2009 he took over the command of the naval base and was promoted to flotilla admiral. In the years 2011 to 2016, various assignments followed at the NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, as well as further training at the NATO School Oberammergau and the NATO Defense College in Rome. He then returned to Bulgaria and was appointed Deputy Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. Between the resignation of Constantin Popov and the appointment of Andrey Botsev as well as after his death, he took over the post of commander of the Bulgarian armed forces from January to March 2017 and from February 2020, which he has held regularly since March 30, 2020.

Personal

Emil Eftimov is married and has two children. In addition to his mother tongue, he speaks English and Russian.
