Miguel Ángel Villarroya (born May 15, 1957 in La Galera ) is a Spanish general and chief of staff of the Spanish armed forces since 2020 .

Life

Miguel Villarroya was born in La Galera, in the province of Tarragona , in 1957 .

Military career

Miguel Ángel Villarroya attended the Spanish Air Force Academy until 1980 . After his training, he served as a pilot on the Lockheed C-130 (referred to in Spain as the T-10).

In January 2011 he was promoted to brigadier general and moved to the air force staff. A year later he switched to European Air Group , where he took on various tasks over the next few years and was promoted to major general. In 2015 he became Commander of the Canary Islands Air Force Command . In April 2017 he was promoted to lieutenant general and transferred to the Ministry of Defense.

On January 14, 2020, Villarroya was appointed Chief of Staff of the Spanish Armed Forces to succeed Fernando Alejandre Martínez . Associated with this was the promotion to the rank of four-star general.

During his service, General Villarroya completed more than 9800 flight hours and was u. a. Awarded various levels of the Spanish Military Order of Merit.

Private

Miguel Ángel Villarroya is married with two children and a grandfather of three. In addition to Spanish, he is also fluent in English.
