Martin Herem (born December 17, 1973 in Tallinn ) is an officer in the Estonian Army with the rank of major general . Since December 5, 2018 he has been Commander of the Defense Forces of the Republic of Estonia . Before that, he was Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces from 2016 to 2018.

Life

Martin Herem was born in 1973 in Tallinn, the capital of what was then the Estonian SSR .

Military career

Promotions

After completing his officer training, Martin Herem initially served in the Kuperjanov Infantry Battalion from 1996 to 1998. He then moved to the Tartu Infantry Battalion. After completing postgraduate studies at the Baltic Defense Academy , he worked as a trainer and head of the tactics department at the National Defense Academy ( Estonian Kaitseväe Ühendatud Õppeasutused ). In 2007 he became Chief of Staff of Estonia's North Eastern Defense District, having served in the Iraq War ( Operation Iraqi Freedom II ) the previous year . Subsequently, he was appointed commander of this defense district. In 2012 he took over the post of Deputy Commandant of the National Defense Academy. A year later he was appointed commander of the military academy.

On July 15, 2016, Martin Herem was appointed Chief of Staff of the Estonian Army. He was promoted to brigadier general in February 2017 and major general in February 2018. In January 2018 it was announced that he would be appointed military commander in chief of the Estonian armed forces. The handover of command took place on December 4th of the same year. In the last two posts he was the first officer trained in Estonia after the restoration of national independence.

Private

Martin Herem is a grandson of the Estonian archaeologist Harri Moora and his wife Aliise. About his mother (the youngest child of the two) he has numerous z. Some of the internationally known cousins. This includes the politician Jürgen Ligi .

The general himself is married and has a son and two daughters. In addition to his mother tongue, he speaks English and Russian. His hobbies include hunting and hiking.
