The US Army Command and General Staff College ( CGSC ) in Fort Leavenworth , Kansas is a higher education institution for the US Armed Forces for the training of military leadership. It was originally founded in 1881 as a school for the infantry and cavalry .

The CGSC is commanded by Lieutenant General Robert L. Caslen, Jr. The Command and General Staff College is divided into schools :

Command and General Staff School (CGSS)

The Command and General Staff School trains middle-level officers in the US Army and international students as commanders or staff officers for all types of land force operations.

School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS)

This school trains future commanders from the U.S. armed forces and international students. The aim is to enable students to solve complex problems on an operational and strategic level. The study programs of this school lead to a Masters degree in Military Arts and Sciences .

School for Command Preparation (SCP)

This department trains officers for future use as brigade or battalion commanders . NCOs are also trained as command sergeant major of a battalion or brigade.

School of Advanced Leadership and Tactics (SALT)

The School of Advanced Leadership and Tactics trains officers from lieutenant to major on a tactical level.
