Claudio Graziano (born November 22, 1953 in Turin ) is a general in the Italian Army . From late February 2015 to early November 2018 he was Chief of Staff of the Italian Armed Forces . Since November 2018 he has been Chairman of the Military Committee of the European Union .

Military career

Graziano was trained at the military academy in Modena and Turin and from 1976 initially served as platoon leader and company commander with the Alpini . He graduated from the Army and Armed Forces Leadership Academy ( CASD ) and the United States Army War College in Carlisle .

In 1992 he became the commander of the Alpini Battalion Susa , at the head of which he participated in a mission in Mozambique as part of the ONUMOZ . In the years that followed, Graziano served with various staffs and also as an Italian military attaché in Washington, DC From 2004 to 2006 he was commander of the Alpini Brigade Taurinense in Turin . From July 2005 to February 2006, he and his staff led the Kabul Multinational Brigade (KMNB VIII, Regional Command Capital) in the Afghan capital as part of ISAF VIII . During this time, the Taurinense served there under the leadership of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps - Italy as a framework brigade , into which the contingents of 22 other countries were also integrated.

In March 2006 Claudio Graziano became Major General Chief of Operations in the Italian Operations Command ( COI ) in Rome-Centocelle . On February 2, 2007, he took over command of the significantly reinforced UNIFIL force in Lebanon from the French General Alain Pellegrini . On January 28, 2010, Graziano handed over the UNIFIL command to the Spanish General Alberto Asarta, in order to then become Chief of the Cabinet of the Defense Minister in Rome as Lieutenant General .

Claudio Graziano took over the post of Chief of Staff of the Army from General Giuseppe Valotto on December 6, 2011 .

On December 24, 2014, Graziano was designated as the new Chief of Staff of the Italian Armed Forces by a Council of Ministers resolution. He took over this post on February 28, 2015 from Admiral Luigi Binelli Mantelli . On November 5, 2018, Air Force General Enzo Vecciarelli succeeded Graziano as Chief of the General Staff.

In November 2017, General Graziano was elected Chairman of the EU Military Committee. He took on this new role on November 6, 2018.
