Luigi Binelli Mantelli (born December 4, 1950 in Breno , Lombardy ) is a retired admiral in the Italian Navy . From the end of January 2013 to the end of February 2015 he was Chief of Staff of the Italian Armed Forces .

Military career

Binelli Mantelli completed high school at the Francesco Morosini Naval School in Venice and then, between 1969 and 1973, the Accademia Navale . He served as an officer in 1973 and 1974 on the destroyer Audace , from 1974 to 1976 on its sister ship Ardito and from 1978 to 1980 on the frigate Carabiniere . Immediately afterwards, he took over the anti-mine craft Platano and then the corvette Albatros as commander , each for a year. From 1984 to 1986 he served on the cruiser Vittorio Veneto , then from 1989 to 1990 as commander of the frigate Grecale . From 1994 to 1996 he commanded the aircraft carrier Garibaldi , with which he took part in Operation United Shield off Somalia in 1995 . Between 1999 and 2001 he was in command of an offshore association and also the joint amphibious association of Spain and Italy (SIAF) .

On land he worked in various positions at the naval command in Santa Rosa , with the admiral's staff in the Ministry of Defense in Rome and at the Naval Academy in Livorno . From 1997 to 1999 he headed the financial planning office, from 2001 to 2004 the planning and operations department of the Admiralty's staff and from 2004 to 2007 under Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola his office in the General Staff of the Armed Forces.

From April 30, 2007 to April 20, 2009 Binelli Mantelli was Deputy Chief of Admiralty Staff. Between April 29, 2009 and February 22, 2012, he led or supported several operations as Fleet Commander (CINCNAV) , including an aid mission for the carrier Cavour in Haiti, as well as operations against piracy in the Indian Ocean and the participation of Italian naval forces in the international military operation in Libya . On March 2, 2012, Binelli Mantelli was appointed Chief of the Admiralty's Staff in the Italian Navy. On January 31, 2013, he took over from General Biagio Abrate, the post of Chief of Staff of the Italian Armed Forces. On February 28, 2015, Binelli Mantelli retired. His successor as Chief of Staff was General Claudio Graziano .

Binelli Mantelli completed the Admiralty Staff Course in Livorno from 1986 to 1987, the Armed Forces Command Academy in Rome from 1996 to 1997 and the General and Flag Officers Course at the NATO Defense College in Rome in 2002 .
