The Cavour (ID: 550) is an aircraft carrier of the Italian Marina Militare . The Cavour is the flagship of the fleet commander and part of the 2nd Fleet Division . Home port of the ship and its carrier combat group is Taranto .
history
After long planning, the Italian shipyard Fincantieri received the order for a small multi-purpose aircraft carrier on November 22, 2000, which is to replace the old helicopter carrier Vittorio Veneto and to supplement the only carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi until around 2025. In the summer of 2001, work began on the modules of the ship in Genoa and La Spezia , which were put together in La Spezia from the end of 2004. The tests began on December 22, 2006, on March 27, 2008 the ship was handed over to the Italian Navy, and on June 10, 2009 the commissioning took place in Civitavecchia .
After the names Luigi Einaudi and Andrea Doria were originally in discussion, the new aircraft carrier was christened in the name of the first Italian Prime Minister Cavour . The longer name Conte di Cavour carried, among other things, the type ship of a battleship class (1910-1947).
From December 2018 to May 2020, the Cavour aircraft carrier in the Naval Arsenal in Taranto was modernized and modified to enable it to operate with new Lockheed Martin F-35 B combat aircraft . The work concerned in particular the flight deck and the hangar, but also other areas inside the ship. The innovations include a Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS). The small porter Garibaldi , which from 2012 had mainly served as a helicopter carrier for amphibious operations, was again available for the operation of the previous AV-8B Harrier while the Cavour was in dock .
interpretation
The Cavour, which is 244 meters long and displacing around 27,000 tons, is designed as a multi-purpose ship. The flight operations take place on a 220 × 34 m flight deck. V / STOL aircraft take off via the front flight deck ramp, which rises by 12 °. The flight deck has eight parking positions for aircraft and six helipads as well as two aircraft and two ammunition lifts. The 134 m long and 21 m wide hangar (2,500 m²) offers space for twelve helicopters or eight aircraft (possibly more). As a rule, there are no more than 16 combat aircraft and eight helicopters on board. Thanks to a high degree of automation, the Cavour manages with a crew of 451 men, plus 203 naval aviators and, as a rule, 140 soldiers from a staff to lead a fleet.
Contrary to the original plans, the amphibious capacities of the aircraft carrier were considerably restricted, and landing docks were ultimately dispensed with entirely. Instead, thanks to a ramp at the rear , the hangar can be used in whole or in part as a ro-ro garage and thus accommodate up to 100 light or 50 medium-sized vehicles or 24 heavy vehicles (battle tanks). If necessary, additional vehicles can be brought to the flight deck via the ramp, hangar and on-board lifts and transported there. There is also space for up to 416 marines , who can be deployed by helicopter.
The Cavour has an on-board hospital with two operating rooms , an intensive care unit and a number of other facilities.
Calls
- On January 19, 2010, the ship was sent to Haiti without planes, only with helicopters, relief supplies and helpers on board , to provide disaster relief there after the January 12 earthquake . On the way there, the ship made a detour via Brazil to take rescue workers on board. The ship entered Fortaleza / Brazil in the morning on January 28, 2010, took assistants and material on board and set sail for Haiti in the evening. It reached Haiti on January 31, 2010.
- On November 13, 2013, a naval unit (30º Gruppo navale ) consisting of the carrier Cavour , the supplier Etna , the frigate Bergamini and the patrol ship Borsini ran from Civitavecchia under the command of Admiral Paolo Treu on a domestically controversial voyage in the Persian Gulf and to a circumnavigation of the African continent. The carrier Cavour was made available to Italian armaments companies as an exhibition platform for their products, which some political parties and peace organizations strongly criticized. The navy defended itself with the argument that the support of the domestic economy and the upcoming Expo 2015 was only one aspect of the journey, that members of humanitarian organizations were also taken on board, the on-board hospital of the Cavour in various African ports for free operations of the needy Will be made available and otherwise several exercises with other naval forces are planned. In the Indian Ocean, where the patrol ship Borsini is leaving the association, they are also making a contribution to securing merchant shipping. The association returned to Civitavecchia on April 8, 2014, after having covered around 21,500 nautical miles and visiting 21 ports in 20 countries.
- In the summer of 2015, the Cavour took over the leadership of the European Union Naval Force - Mediterranean .
