FREMM is a series of frigates that France and Italy have been building since 2007 in a joint project for their respective naval forces and for export. The term FREMM is the French Fré gate M Ultimatum M ission or Italian Fri gata M Ultimatum M issione .

Versions

The FREMM frigates are a variant of the Franco-Italian command and air defense ships of the Horizon project . The FREMM frigates are built in two versions: "ASW" ( Anti Submarine Warfare , in France: "ASM") and "GP / LA" ( General Purpose / Land Attack , in France: "AVT" - Action Vers la Terre ) . The French Armaris consortium (consisting of the Thales Group and DCN ) began building a total of eleven FREMM frigates for the French Navy in 2007 . Originally, 17 ships were planned, eight of them ASM and nine AVT. They were originally both frigates classes Tourville and Georges Leygues , and the Corvette Class D'Estienne d'Orves replace.

In Italy , ten FREMM frigates (4 ASW and 6 GP / LA) were commissioned from Orizzonte Sistemi Navali , a consortium consisting of Fincantieri and Leonardo-Finmeccanica ( Leonardo from 2017). According to original plans, the new ships in the Italian Navy should replace the frigates of the Maestrale class and the Artigliere class . With the influx of the FREMM frigates, however, smaller units such as corvettes are initially decommissioned and the frigates of the Maestrale and Artigliere classes are used a little longer and then replaced by larger patrol ships.

Since no further ships have been ordered from the Horizon class for financial reasons, an anti-aircraft variant of the FREMM frigates is now being planned , which in France is known as FREDA (Frégates de défense aériennes) . If a vertical launching system of the Sylver A50 type (instead of A43) is installed in the two original versions , Aster 30 rockets can also be fired. Thanks to these longer range missiles and a new, active version of the Empar multifunction radar , the standard versions of the frigates also become fully functional anti-aircraft ships . With the VLS system Sylver A70 GP / LA ships can cruise missiles of the type MDCN use.

units

FranceFrance France - Aquitaine class

Eight ships were ordered on November 16, 2005. In its 2008 Defense White Paper, the French government announced that it would limit itself to a total of eleven instead of the previously planned 17 units. Nine ships should initially be built in the ASW / ASM version, the last two units in the air defense variant FREDA as a replacement for the two destroyers of the Cassard class . The order for the last three frigates was placed on October 8, 2009 on the occasion of the keel-laying of Normandy .

The first eight units are named after French regions. The Aquitaine was delivered to the Navy nationale in 2012 and is still being tested until it is commissioned. As announced by the government in mid-2013, the production rate will be extended to one ship every 14 months for budget reasons, ships 7 and 8 are already being built in the FREDA version instead of ASW frigates.

The last two ASW units, ships 5 and 6, have instead of the two A43 launchers those of the A50 type, from which the Aster 30 missiles can be fired in addition to the Aster 15. The reason is an improved air defense capability, which would arise from a capability gap in the Marine Nationale in the time between the decommissioning of the Cassard class and the commissioning of the two FREDA units.

The sale of the first Normandy led to the rescheduling so that instead of Brittany, the second Normandy was implemented in the FREDA version.

The configuration of the last three units, which will be delivered between 2013 and 2025, will be determined in 2016; if necessary there will be technical innovations.

The first two of the ten planned frigates were ordered in 2005, four more followed in 2008, two more in 2013, and the last two in 2015. The Italian ships are designed for the use of the Aster 30 missiles. A large part of the costs of the FREMM program is covered by the Italian Ministry of Economic Affairs , which wants to help the ailing shipbuilding industry in Liguria . The Italian FREMM are built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Riva Trigoso , the bow sections are prefabricated in neighboring Muggiano . The first three frigates put into service were stationed in La Spezia ( 1ª Divisione navale ) , the stationing of five ships each in La Spezia and Taranto is planned.

In terms of name, the first six ships are in the succession of the Bergamini and Alpino classes . The Carabiniere frigate was launched in 2014 because the Carabinieri celebrated their 200th anniversary this year.

Since 2019 there have been plans to sell the last two of the 10 FREMMs ordered by the Italian Navy to the Navy of Egypt . The Italian Navy is to receive two new FREMM for these two FREMMs to be sold.

MoroccoMorocco Morocco - Aquitaine class

United StatesUnited States United States - FFG (X) program

A version designed on the basis of the Italian ASW-FREMM according to US requirements was selected by the United States Navy for its FFG (X) program on April 30, 2020 . The FREMM version for the US Navy will be slightly larger with a displacement of 7,500 tons and will also have a more powerful drive. The sensors include, among others, a baseline 10 Aegis-fighting system and a AN / SPY-6 (V) 3 - Multi-function radar , the effectors, a RAM - short range defense system , 16 Naval Strike Missiles , a Mark 41 Vertical Launching System with 32 cells and a 57 mm -Mk 110 - naval gun . A frigate of this type has been firmly ordered, there are options for nine more, a total of 20 ships are planned. They are built by Fincantieri's subsidiary Marinette Marine in Wisconsin , and a number of components are supplied from Italy. The first ship is scheduled for delivery in 2026.
