The Royal Moroccan Navy ( Arabic القوات البحرية الملكية المغربية, DMG al-Quwwāt al-baḥriyya al-malakiyya al-maġribiyya , Central Atlas Tamazight ⴰⴷⵡⴰⵙ ⴰⴳⵍⴷⴰⵏ ⵏ ⵢⵉⵍⴻⵍ Adwas Ageldan n Yilel , French Marine Royale , Spanish Marina Real Marroquí ) is the naval force of the armed forces of the Kingdom of Morocco .
It was founded on April 1st 1960 by the then King Mohammed V to monitor and protect the Moroccan coasts and the Strait of Gibraltar .
structure
The largest naval base is in Casablanca . There are other smaller bases in Agadir , al-Hoceima , ad-Dakhla , Kenitra , Safi and Tangier . The strength of the Royal Navy is about 42,000 men.
The naval base in Ksar-Seghir in the north of the country is the first base that only serves the Moroccan military and one of the most important in the kingdom. The cost of construction was 1.39 billion Moroccan dirhams .
The tasks of the Royal Navy in detail are as follows:
- Logistic support
- Monitoring water quality
- Coast guard
- Help with scientific research on oceanography , hydrography and meteorology
- Representation abroad
- Enforcement of Customs Regulations
- Combating illegal trade (drugs, plagiarism, etc.)
Marine infantry
The Royal Navy has a corps of around 7,000 to 8,000 marines for transports, sabotage and special operations . They are in three Marines - battalions divided, engaged in the naval bases al-Hoceima , ad-Dakhla and Agadir are. Another company is stationed in Casablanca .
The Marines have anti-tank missiles , heavy machine guns, 23mm automatic cannons (some mounted on the vehicles), 120mm mortars, and recoilless cannons. It is made manoeuvrable with light tactical vehicles such as HMMWVs and transport trucks.
Each battalion consists of around 2,300 to 2,500 marines and consists of three infantry companies and one company for special missions such as transports, infiltration, sabotage, reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, hostage liberation, etc.
