Haliclystus octoradiatus or cup jellyfish is a species of the pedunculate jellyfish / Stauromedusae in the genus Haliclystus - family Lucernariidae in the suborder Eleutherocarpida of the order Staurozoa .
description
The cup jellyfish Haliclystus octoradiatus becomes up to 3 cm wide and 5 cm high, has a long stem and a relatively flat umbrella. At the edge of the octoradial screen there are eight tufts of nettle capsules on the tentacle arms, with an edge anchor between each on the indentations of the screen. The color of the cup jellyfish varies from (light) gray on (bright) yellow to brown-depending on the color of the sea grasses and algae on which it lives.
Haliclystus octoradiatus attaches itself to the ground with the help of its suction cup (usually algae or seaweed); it is able to change location and can anchor itself in a new location with the help of its movable handle and the edge anchors when it detaches from its subsurface.
Haliclystus octoradiatus has a high proportion of abnormally formed individuals.
Occurrence
Flat coastal areas below the intertidal zone of the North Atlantic with the North Sea and the western Baltic Sea .
Taxonomy
The species was described by Lamarck in 1816 as Lucernaria octoradiatus and assigned to the genus Haliclystus by James Clark in 1863 .
