The BATRAL-class is a series of five medium-sized landing ships of the French Navy . Eight other ships were built for the naval forces of Chile , Morocco , Gabon and the Ivory Coast .
BATRAL is an acronym for Bâ timent de Tra nsport L éger and translated means light transport ship . In France, the units after the type ship are known as the Champlain class.
Furnishing
The BATRAL class was designed to transport 400 tons of material and an invasion force of up to 138 soldiers across the sea. The ships are equipped in such a way that they can also unload the soldiers and their equipment on the beach, either directly via the bow visor or via two landing craft . They also have a ship crane and a flight deck for light helicopters . With the invasion force embarked, the sea endurance is ten days.
Armament
The armament is purely defensive and varies depending on the naval affiliation. Two 81-mm mortars , two 40-mm anti-aircraft guns and two 12.7-mm machine guns are used .
drive
The landing craft are powered by two marine diesel engines that act on two controllable pitch propellers . The maximum speed is 16 knots . At a cruising speed of 13 knots, the range is 4,500 nautical miles .
