Israeli Sa'ar class boat

Constructions Mécaniques de Normandie (CMN) is a shipyard in Cherbourg, France . The main focus of production is on light warships and luxury yachts .

history

The shipyard was founded in 1945 by the aircraft designer Félix Amiot . The fishing cutter Annie was launched on June 23, 1948 , and 350 vessels have been built since then. CMN initially specialized in wooden shipbuilding and in the early 1970s produced a series of minehunting boats of the Circé class with wooden hulls for the French Navy . There were also minesweepers , patrol boats , tuna fishing vehicles and small cargo ships for coastal and inland areas.

From 1967 onwards, CMN specialized in the construction of modern missile speedboats and acquired an internationally leading position with the Combattante type , which was manufactured in several versions. The boat type was based on a design by the German Lürssen shipyard, which was developed for Israel . When these boats were not allowed to be built in Germany for political reasons, CMN was commissioned to build twelve Sa'ar-1 class boats . After its completion, France had also issued an export ban. The five boats that had not yet been delivered were then kidnapped in a secret operation from Cherbourg on December 24th and 25th, 1969, and brought to Israel against the official will of the French authorities. Through this action the boats of the CMN became known worldwide as Vedettes de Cherbourg .

In 1970, the German Navy ordered from CMN 20 the Tiger-class speedboats developed from the Combattante-II draft , eight of which were fully equipped in Germany. The rest were completely manufactured by CMN. All boats were put into service between 1972 and 1975.

In 1992 the shipyard was taken over by Iskandar Safa.
