The Bergamini class , also known as the Rizzo class , was a class of four light frigates built for the Italian Navy in the late 1950s and early 1960s . The frigates developed as escort ships for submarine hunting were the first units to be built with a helicopter landing deck and hangar for on-board helicopters.

history

The Italian Navy began testing helicopters in 1953. In the following year, an AB 47 helicopter landed on the modified deck of the cruiser Garibaldi for the first time . On the basis of these tests and the experience with the Centauro- class frigates built in the mid-1950s , the Bergamini-class was developed, the four units of which were initially classified as fast corvettes and then as light frigates when they were commissioned. They displaced around 1,500 tons. It was noticeable that they no longer had a tapered stern, but a transom stern , as is still common on today's warships. The helicopter deck did not reach to the stern, as a 76 mm gun was initially placed there. In 1969 this gun was removed from the four ships because the flight deck had to be extended due to the introduction of larger helicopters of the type AB 204 (later AB 212 ). The telescopic hangar was still pulled over parts of the flight deck when necessary.

Ships of the class

Two ships of the class were decommissioned in the early 1980s, the other two in the early 1990s, after being briefly in reserve. The frigates were named after four soldiers of the Royal Italian Navy : Admiral Carlo Bergamini , captain Virginio Fasan, sea captain Carlo Margottini and frigate captain Luigi Rizzo .

successor

The conceptual successor to the Bergamini class is the Alpino class . The names of the four former Bergamini-class ships are currently four Italian FREMM frigates . The latter are also referred to as the Bergamini class (or Rinascimento class) after their Italian type ship.
