The Alpino class was a ship class of the Italian Navy . The class consisted of the two frigates Alpino and Carabiniere, built in Riva Trigoso near Genoa in the 1960s . The two ships were mainly intended for submarine hunting . Towards the end of their service, they took on special tasks after renovations.
history
The Alpino class was a further development of the Centauro class (or Canopo class) of the 1950s and the Bergamini class that followed immediately afterwards . The latter was the first to be built with a flight deck for helicopters , which has proven itself and thus continued in the Alpino class and in all other frigate classes. The most important innovations in the Alpino class included fin stabilizers , which made it possible to use on-board helicopters even in rough seas, and a CODAG drive .
Originally, four ships named Circe, Climene, Perseo and Polluce were planned. They were intended to take over the names and traditions of four Spica- class torpedo boats that distinguished themselves during World War II . Due to changes in the planning and design, two ships were then named after members of the Alpini (mountain troops) and the Carabinieri (military police), as Alpino and Carabiniere each in the singular . So they were in the wake of two destroyers of the Soldati class from the Second World War. The destroyer Alpino was lost in a US air raid in La Spezia in 1943 , while the destroyer Carabiniere with the identification D 551 remained in active service until 1960 and then with the identification A 5314 served as a test ship until 1965. The successor was used in a comparable way.
Ships of the class
Alpino
The frigate Alpino (F 580) (original name: Circe ) was laid on February 27, 1963 in Riva Trigoso near Genoa , the launch took place (after a ceremony on June 10) on June 14, 1967, the handover to the Marine on January 14, 1968. Together with the sister ship Carabiniere and others, it belonged to the 1st Sea Squadron ( 1º Gruppo navale d'altura ) of the 1st Marine Division ( 1ª Divisione navale ) in La Spezia. In 1987, major modernization work was carried out, particularly concerning the electronics. In the mid-1990s, it was converted into a tender for anti-mine vehicles and was given the identification A 5384 in 1998. In the course of the conversion, the anti-submarine armament, two of six 76 mm guns and the gas turbines were removed. As a tender, the Alpino took over management of the Countermeasures Force South mine . The Alpino was decommissioned on March 31, 2006 in La Spezia.
Carabiniere
The frigate Carabiniere (F 581) (originally Climene ) was laid down on January 9, 1965, also in Riva Trigoso, launched on September 30, 1967 and handed over on April 28, 1968. In the case of the Carabiniere , modernization work also took place in the mid-1980s. On April 1, 1992, the Carabiniere was subordinated to the coastal section command in La Spezia and converted to a test ship by the end of 1994, with the anti-submarine armament and five of six 76 mm guns removed. In contrast to its predecessor, the ship retained its previous identification. In this form, the Carabiniere tested various systems of the Horizon class ships planned at the time and the FREMM frigates , in particular the PAAMS air defense system with the EMPAR multifunction radar and the Sylver vertical launching system as well as the SLAT torpedo defense system. The frigate Carabiniere was decommissioned on November 19, 2008 in La Spezia.
successor
The conceptual successor to the Alpino class is the Lupo class . The names Carabiniere and Alpino currently have the fourth and fifth Italian FREMM.
