history
Monfalcone was Venetian until 1797, then Habsburg until 1805, and again from 1814 until the end of the First World War. The place and its surrounding area became part of the county of Gorizia and Gradisca in 1816 , with the area forming the judicial district of Monfalcone and since 1868 again part of the district of Monfalcone .
Since 1908, large shipyards have settled in the city , which made Monfalcone known as the city of shipyards . One of the first was the Cantiere Navale Triestino shipyard , which manufactured, among other things, for the Austro-Americana . The Fincantieri company mainly builds cruise ships in Monfalcone , which are among the largest in the world.
During the First World War , in the course of the Isonzo battles , in which hundreds of thousands of Italian and Austrian soldiers died, there was also fighting in Monfalcone. The shipyard facilities were completely destroyed. Among the dead was the Italian architect Antonio Sant'Elia .
