Tolmezzo ( Friulian Tumieç , German outdated Schonfeld , Slovenian Tolmeč , Latin Tulmetium ) is a city on the river Tagliamento in Friuli with 10,090 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). The urban area extends to 65.69 km² and is 323  m slm Tolmezzo is the capital of the historical region of Carnia .

history

Tolmezzo was owned by the Patriarchs of Aquileia from around AD 1000 . 1258 the congregation received by the Patriarch Gregorio da Montelongo the market rights for the whole of Carnia. In 1275, Patriarch Raimondo della Torre granted the parish town charter .

The district court of Tolmezzo, reaching as far as today's Austrian border, belonged to the Republic of Venice from 1420 until its end in 1796 . After the Napoleonic and Austrian times , Tolmezzo has been Italian since the state was founded in 1866.

Merchants and traveling traders from Tolmezzo and the valleys of Carnia maintained contacts far beyond the Alps and were out and about throughout the Danube region over the summer months .

There were family relationships with the greater Munich area as well as business relationships there. For example, on February 25, 1609, the letter logs of the Klosterhofmark Fürstenfeld (Fürstenfeldbruck near Munich) recorded a mortgage note in which a Daniel Phillip, son of Peter Philipp from “Paluz im Schönvelder Gricht, Venedißcher Herrßchaft” gave his “cousin” (= generally “ Relative ”), also Peter Philipp, Kramer in Markt Bruck (= Fürstenfeldbruck near Munich) issues a promissory note for the receipt of goods that that Brucker Kramer had delivered to him.

Attractions

  • The cathedral, Duomo di San Martino , in Piazza XX Settembre was built in 1764 on the site of an earlier church according to the plans of Domenico Schiavi from Tolmezzo. The painting of the high altar by Francesco Fontebasso (1763) shows the Madonna and Child between the hll. Martin and Karl Borromeo . An angel stands on the top of the tower as a weather vane .
  • The Church of St. Catherine , Chiesa di Santa Caterina . In the ceiling fresco is St. Katharina depicted. The high altar painting by Pomponio Amalteo (1537) shows the mystical wedding of St. Catherine, the predella her martyrdom.
  • The churches of St. Florian , Pieve di San Floriano , and of the Conversion of St. Paul , Chiesa della Conversione di San Paolo , in Illegio. The origin of San Floriano is in the 9th century. The church can only be reached on foot from the site (30–45 minutes). The late Baroque Church of the Conversion of St. Paul from the 18th century is in the village and, like the cathedral, was built by Domenico Schiavi. The ceiling fresco shows the conversion of the apostle Paul.
  • The Casa delle Esposizioni , the house of exhibitions, in Illegio. Exhibitions of fine arts with a Christian religious reference take place here. Exhibitions: 2013 Il Cammino di Pietro ; 2015 L'Ultima Creatura, L'Idea Divina del Femminile ; 2016 OLTRE. In viaggio con cercatori, fuggitivi, pellegrini ; 2017 AMANTI.
