Ronchi dei Legionari (Furlanisch Roncjis , Slovenian Ronke , German obsolete Ronkis ) is an Italian municipality with 11,937 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and the seat of the Trieste airport .

In addition to the main town of Ronchi, the municipality has three other hamlets ( frazioni ):

  • Cave di Selz
  • Soleschiano
  • Vermegliano

history

The municipality was part of the county of Gorizia and Gradisca until the end of the First World War , where it was subordinate to the judicial district of Monfalcone , which in turn was part of the district of Monfalcone . The current name refers to the irregulars ( legionari ) of Gabriele D'Annunzio who set out for Fiume on September 12, 1919 to occupy it.
