history

San Pietro al Natisone first belonged to the kingdom of Odoacer , then to the Ostrogoths and Byzantium , before it was conquered in 568 by the Lombards , who temporarily established their own duchy there. During this time, the population suffered particularly, as the city was located immediately to the west of the Birnbaumer forest , which, as a mountain pass in the Julian Alps, formed the gateway for invaders who invaded Italy. Ecclesiastically, San Pietro al Natisone was subordinate to the Patriarchate of Aquileia . Under the Carolingians , it became part of the Friuli march, then the margraviate of Verona , then came under the rule of the Patriarch of Aquileia before it fell to Venice in 1421 . The rule of the Habsburgs followed (briefly interrupted by a French interlude) and in 1866 the incorporation into Italy.

In the course of the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo from 24.-27. On October 26 , 1917, the Central Powers advanced into the Friuli plain on October 26th . In the evening the German and Austro-Hungarian troops reached the line Prevala - Rombon - Kanin - Stolvizza - Nizki vrh - Passo di Tanamea - Monte Maggiore - Monte Cavallo - Platischi, Prosenico, Robedišče - Clenia - San Leonardo - San Giovanni - Zapotok. Also Cividale could be taken.

Sacred buildings

Saint Peter's Church

The Church of Saint Peter is probably not one of the most valuable ones : it is a modern structure, of little architectural importance, but is characterized by its beautiful altar, created in 1761 by Carlo Picco from Palmese and the beautiful tabernacle by the Lombard sculptor GA Pilaconte (1500), set with putti heads and a pietà at the end . The tabernacle rests on a base with bas-relief figures depicting Saint George and the dragon, created by an anonymous 15th century Slovenian master.

Another special feature is the organ by the old Venetian master Gaetano Callido with a balanced sound and excellent acoustics, thanks to the building.

San Quirino Church

The church of San Quirino, the oldest sacred building in the parish, stands on a prehistoric necropolis that was reused in the Romanesque era. The church was built in 1250 and completely renovated in 1493, which you can read on a stone built into the outer wall, which names the year of construction and builder in Gothic script: “Anno Domi (ni) 1493-ma (giste) r Mart (inus) Petr (I-ic) ". Manufactured goods from prehistoric times were discovered inside the church. Today the church is a memorial for those who fell in the war.

Sights in the municipality

San Giovanni in Antro rock chapel

The cave and the rock chapel of San Giovanni in Antro, which can be reached via the village of Tiglio, have long been used by the people. Cave bears and Stone Age hunters once lived in the 4.5 km long grotto , then it served as a place of refuge during raids in Roman , Celtic and Longobard times. A hermit named Deacon Felice is said to have perished his pious, consecrated existence here and was also buried here. The tomb with the inscription can still be seen today.

The grotto, which is only accessible in the first part, about 300 m long, has to be approached on foot. The last section consists of 100 steps that lead to the rock chapel called San Giovanni Battista ed'Evangelista at the cave entrance. It is completely carved out of the rock, only for the front wall and the sacristy the Slovenian builder raised walls in 1477. Behind the altar the entrance to the dark, often flooded grotto opens.
