Attractions

Religious area

  • The old parish church of St. Stephen ( Pieve di Santo Stefano) in the Cesclans district determines the appearance of the community. When leaving the penultimate tunnel of the A23 on the journey south, the traveler on the right will notice this sacred building on a rock above Lake Cavazzo, which blends harmoniously into the mountain landscape. After the damage from the 1976 earthquake, the structure was rebuilt and during the three years between 1993 and 1996 archaeological investigations were carried out on site by F. Piuzzi. The studies revealed that “at least from the 7th century onwards, one cannot speak of the parish church of Cesclans”. The structure of the first church was definitely surrounded by castle walls, with a massive bell tower that can be dated to the 8th to 9th centuries. The latter modifications were done on horseback between the 15th and 16th centuries and in 1777 the structure took on the form it is known today.
  • Among the other places of worship , the Church of St. Daniel (Chiesa di San Daniele) from the 18th century should be highlighted, which houses valuable Venetian furnishings inside, among which the paintings by Tintoretto and Bassano from the 17th century should be emphasized. The ceiling paintings in the nave, which were restored by the superintendent in 1981, are remarkable, in the depictions of the resurrection of Christ, Madonna and Child and Saints Anthony and Rochus, Habakkuk led by the angel who brings the food to Daniel in the lions' den in 1798 by C. Boldi from Tarcento .
  • Worth mentioning is the Chapel of St. Roch (Chiesetta di San Rocco); the building, founded in the 16th century, preserves a wooden high altar from the 18th century by Gerolamo Comuzzo .

Natural area

  • Lake Cavazzo , also known as the “Lake of the Three Municipalities”, is the largest natural lake in Friuli Venezia Giulia .
  • The Monte Festa mountain with its stronghold from the First World War.
