Domenico Tintoretto
Domenico Tintoretto , origin. Domenico Robusti (born November 27, 1560 in Venice ; † May 17, 1635 there ) was a Venetian painter . He was the eldest son of Jacopo Tintoretto and his wife Faustina Episcopi, and also the half-brother of Marietta Robusti , called 'La Tintoretta'.
Life
According to Carlo Ridolfi , Domenico was primarily interested in ancient and modern literature before he began working regularly in his father's workshop when he was around twenty. He loved the works of Ariost and Tasso and his friends and acquaintances included the writer Guido Casoni and the poet Celio Magno. Domenico painted a portrait of the latter in 1597 , to which the poet responded with a sonnet .
In Jacopo Tintoretto's workshop, Domenico was trained in the style of his father and initially adapted to his style of painting, so that he soon became his closest collaborator. So he could easily be called in to late major orders from his father and actively work on them. From 1578 he was already involved in Tintoretto's Gonzaga cycle ( Fasti gonzagheschi ; Munich, Alte Pinakothek ).
Domenico was involved in the redecoration of the Doge's Palace between 1580 and 1584 and rose from merely carrying out his father's ideas to being the overseer of the workshop, while his father worked alone in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco . Domenico completed Jacopo's votive pictures of Doges Andrea Gritti , Nicolò da Ponte and Alvise Mocenigo in the Sala del Collegio, worked on the Battle of Zara in the Sala dello Scrutinio, on the triumph of Venezia in the Sala del Senato, and on the triumph of Doge Nicolò da Ponte on the ceiling of the Sala del Maggior Consiglio. In the same hall he also played a major role in the great paradise from 1588 to 1592 .
For the monastery church of Sant 'Andrea della Zirada, Domenico created a three-part Passion of Christ in 1583 and around the same time for Santa Maria Maggiore (in Venice) a wedding of the Virgin Mary (today: Fondazione Cini), an Adoration of the Magi and Joachim becomes from the Temple evicted (both today in San Trovaso ; Fig. Below). In 1585 he was also admitted to the Scuola di San Marco , for which he had previously painted one of his best works: the dream of St. Markus (today in the Gallerie dell'Accademia , Venice).
He painted several works for the Scuola dei Mercanti, including the altarpiece of a Madonna with St. Christophorus and the now lost Adoration of the Shepherds , which the art theorist Marco Boschini (1664) considered his best work. In the 1590s Domenico also worked for the Scuola del Rosario and later on a 10-part cycle for the Scuola grande di San Giovanni Evangelista.
After Jacopo's death, Domenico took over the management of the workshop, which he continued in its tradition and formal language . Presumably he was the official portrait painter of the Republic of Venice, at least numerous works of this genre have survived and it is in the portrait sector where he achieved his greatest mastery. He painted portraits of the Doges Pasquale Cicogna , Marino Grimani and Marcantonio Memmo , as well as of Venetian senators, and was sought after as a portraitist beyond the borders of Venice (including a portrait of Margherita d'Austria). Between 1597 and 1601, in addition to his work in his hometown, he worked in Reggio nell'Emilia , Mantua and Ferrara . After 1600 his art and career began to stagnate and he did not receive any more high-ranking commissions.
In addition to echoes of the work of his father Jacopo Tintoretto, Domenico Tintoretto's painting is characterized by a tendency towards realism reminiscent of Bassano and Palma il Giovane ; he was friends with the latter. In addition, he mainly created history paintings and religious pictures.
Domenico was not married and probably had no children. He died in May 1635 and was buried in the tomb of his grandfather Marco Episcopi in the church of Madonna dell'Orto , next to his father Jacopo and his half-sister Marietta. His legacy, including his father's workshop in particular, went to his younger siblings Marco and Ottavia and to his assistant Sebastian Casser.
