Carlo Ridolfi (born April 1, 1594 in Lonigo , † 1658 in Venice ) was a Venetian painter and artist biographer.

Life

Ridolfi was born as Carlo Sartor, the son of Marco and Angela Boschetto. He was baptized on April 22, 1594, as the parish registers show. Why he took the name Ridolfi is not clear, but it may be that he was trying to hide his simple origins. Our knowledge of his life is based on his biographical information in his main work, the Maraviglie dell'arte (1648, 1924, Vol. II, pp. 306–323). In it he mentions that his German ancestors settled in Venice at the beginning of the 16th century. His parents lived from trading, but they were not wealthy, and bought a house in Lonigo - as the will of the father shows, in the "contrada di Piazza". In 1602 the father died, leaving behind a wife and four boys; Angela Boschetto married a second time, namely an Andrea Schiasero.

Carlo Ridolfi first learned from a German painter and came to Venice in 1607, where he studied with Antonio Vassilacchi (1556–1629) for five years .

Ridolfi made a visitazione for the Chiesa di Ognissanti in Venice , which is now in the Gallerie dell'Accademia . With the Adorazione dei Magi he copied Paolo Veronese , a work that is now in the church of San Giovanni Elemosinario . Ridolfi also made a copy of Tintoretto's washing of feet from 1548/49, which is in the church of San Marcuola .

Carlo Ridolfi was best known for his artist biographies, which were published as Le Maraviglie dell'arte 1646 to 1648. In them he dedicated himself to the artists of Veneto . In doing so, he consciously contrasted his work with that of Giorgio Vasari . In 1642 he had already published the life of Jacopo Tintoretto , in 1646 that of Paolo Veronese .
