The North Carolina Museum of Art is an art museum founded in Raleigh in 1947 .

history

The museum opened on April 6, 1956.

The US state of North Carolina originally provided one million dollars, of which 139 European and American paintings and sculptures were purchased. The museum was the first in the United States to have its collection financed with public money.

The founding director from 1955 to 1958 was the art historian Wilhelm Reinhold Valentiner from Germany . In 1960 the Samuel H. Kress Foundation bequeathed 75 additional works of art to the museum. From 1960 to 1970, the art historian Justus Bier, also from Germany, headed the museum.

Today the collection includes over 5000 works of art from the last 5000 years: from the art of the Egyptians to contemporary works. On April 5, 1983, the museum moved to its current location on Blue Ridge Road.
