Jan Miense Molenaer

Jan Miense Molenaer (* around 1610 in Haarlem ; † September 15, 1668 there ) was a Dutch painter and etcher .
biography
The artist enjoyed his training with Frans Hals and was inspired by the painter Judith Leyster , whom he married in 1636. He lived and worked mainly in Haarlem before settling in Amsterdam after 1648 , where he lodged Jan Lievens the Elder. Jan Miense Molenaer died in Haarlem in 1668.

He mainly painted genre pictures with village scenes and motifs from rural life, in which the influence of Frans Hals and Leyster can be recognized, in particular Leyster's picturesque realism, the light gray background and the coloring of the stronger tones. The interiors are inspired by the work of Adriaen van Ostade . Furthermore, Molenaer painted various portraits and scenes from the thematic area of music.
Molenaer's work influenced his two brothers and Harmen Hals .

The artist was married to Judith Leyster (1609–1660) since 1636 . The couple had the following children:

- Eva (1646)
- Constantine (1650)
His brothers Bartholomaeus Molenaer († 1650 in Haarlem) and Claes Molenaer († 1676 in Haarlem) were also painters.
