Lake Cavazzo ( Italian: Lago dei Tre Comuni or Lago di Cavazzo , Furlanic Lâc di Cjavaç ) is the largest natural lake in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia .

geography

The lake has a surface of 1.18 km², a circumference of 6.5 km, a length of 2.25 km and a maximum width of 800 m. The greatest depth of the water is 39 m, the average depth is 12 m.

Three municipalities have shares in the lake: in the north and west it is Cavazzo Carnico , in the east Bordano and in the south Trasaghis .

Hydrography

During the last ice ages , the deepening formed in which the lake is located today. The conglomerate deposit that separates the lake in the north from the Tagliamento valley was also formed during this period. In the past, a tributary of the Tagliamento flowed through the valley of Lake Cavazzo . Today the lake is fed by the reservoir near Ambiesta / Verzegnis , from which an 8.5 km long tunnel to Lake Cavazzo was driven through the rock when a hydroelectric power plant was built.

The tributary is a canal that runs first underground and then superficially as the Leale torrent . The incoming water has a temperature of only 10 ° C, so that the temperature of the lake water is lowered. Few species can live under these conditions.

It flows south into the Tagliamento.

Flora and fauna

The reed bed consists mainly of reeds and covers the southern part of the lake. It is used by the fish of the lake for reproduction. Fish species in the lake include carp , tench and eel , bleak chub , perch , minnow , three-spined stickleback , brown trout and rainbow trout . The reeds nesting bittern , little bittern and mallard . The common inhabitants of the lake are also the pond rail and kingfisher . During the bird migration raced teal , teal and shoveler , bean goose and Pintail on the lake.

In the more recent past there have been interventions in the landscape and improvements in environmental protection to enhance tourism. Accommodation establishments on the lake provide accommodation. In addition to enjoying the wonderful landscape, there is also the opportunity for water sports, fishing and hiking in the Seetal area. The presence of a butterfly trail with ten display boards contributes significantly to the upgrading of gentle tourism. It runs on the east bank between the villages of Interneppo and Bordano, right at the foot of Monte Simeone.

Infrastructure

A drivable asphalt road allows you to circumnavigate the lake and offers beautiful views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

The A23 (Italy) , also known as the Alps - Adriatic Motorway, runs past the lake to the west and crosses the north-west end of the lake.

To the north of the lake is the Somplago hydropower plant , which drains water into the lake after it has passed through the turbines.
