The battle on Monte Festa

The fortress of Monte Festa was built at the beginning of the 20th century to create a fortification belt to defend Friuli . The strategic situation during the First World War , however, saved it from the front line and was used as an artillery observation post with a little more than 100 men . With the advance of Karfreit in 1917, however, the German - Austrian troops broke through the Italian lines and began their incursion towards the Friulian plain and the Piave . At this point in time, the meager crew of Monte Festa received orders that they should definitely offer resistance. On November 5th, the fortress had become a medium-sized island surrounded by hostile forces. The Austrians attacked on the night of November 5th to 6th, but the Italians resisted with the only available machine gun , which they set up here and there, thus deceiving the attackers about the sustainability of the defenders. When the ammunition ran out, however, the Italians realized that any resistance was futile. They attempted a sortie to reunite with the Italian Army and the others after blowing up the ammunition dump. When the failure failed, they capitulated.
