Doberdò del Lago ( Doberdob in Slovenian ) is a north-eastern Italian municipality with 1,351 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia . The official languages are Italian and Slovenian.
The municipality includes the districts of Devetachi, Jamiano, Marcottini, Visintini, Palichisce, Micoli, Bonetti, Lago di Pietrarossa and Lago di Doberdò. It borders the municipalities of Duino-Aurisina , Fogliano Redipuglia , Monfalcone , Ronchi dei Legionari , Sagrado and Savogna d'Isonzo , Komen and Miren-Kostanjevica in Slovenia .
history
The municipality was part of the county of Gorizia and Gradisca until the end of the First World War , where it was subordinate to the judicial district of Monfalcone , which in turn was part of the district of Monfalcone .
Attractions
The municipality is known for its intermittent lake, Lago di Doberdò ( 3.6 m slm ), which is fed by underground karst rivers , and its wetland, which is rare for karst areas with little surface water .
Since 1996, the lake has been part of the 726 hectare nature reserve of the Doberdò and Pietrarossa lakes in the municipalities of Doberdò del Lago, Monfalcone and Ronchi dei Legionari . Both intermittent lakes lie in large karst depressions ( polje ).
The water level of Lake Doberdò fluctuates by 2–3 m depending on precipitation and underground inflow, and by 5–6 m during high tide. The lake used to have consistently high water levels for weeks in autumn and spring. However, since the First World War the rhythms of accumulation and emptying of the lake have shifted. This is likely to be due to the vibrations caused by explosions and artillery fire in the First World War, which probably led to cracks in the rock layers at the bottom of the lake. The aerial bombs are said to have had a similar effect on the nearby shipyard in Monfalcone during the Second World War .
Above Lake Doberdò, there is an abandoned quarry that has been converted into a visitor center with a natural history museum and conference room.
