St. Marienkirchen bei Schärding is a municipality in Upper Austria in the district of Schärding in the Innviertel with 1897 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The community is located in the judicial district of Schärding .

geography

St. Marienkirchen near Schärding is 338 m above sea level in the Innviertel. The extension is 7.1 km from north to south and 6.4 km from west to east. The total area is 24.9 km². 9.2% of the area is forested, 74.3% of the area is used for agriculture. The municipality is bounded by the Inn in the northwest and the Antiesen in the southwest .

Blazon : In red a silver tip, covered with a green spruce and accompanied on the right by a silver, erect, left-turned wolf, on the left by a silver, erect bear with a silver hoe in its front paws. The community colors are green and white. The bear comes from the Hackledter family coat of arms, the wolf from the coat of arms of the bishops of Passau .

history

The place was Bavarian since the founding of the Duchy of Bavaria . In 1140 it is mentioned for the first time as sanctimarienchirchen in a document from Passau-St.Nikola monastery , and in 1160 in a document from Reichersberg monastery as ecclesia sancte marie . The place came to Austria in 1779 after the Treaty of Teschen and the Innviertel (then 'Innbaiern'). Briefly Bavarian again during the Napoleonic Wars , since 1814 it has finally belonged to Upper Austria.

After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.

Population development

In 1991 the community had 1,820 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001 it had 1,836 inhabitants. As the negative balance of migration could also be offset by the positive birth balance in the following decade , the population rose to 1,841 people in 2011.
