history

The mother parish has been named Mosiliskirchen since 1040 , and Hofmark has been mentioned since 1136 as a historical town center that is still preserved today.

At the time of the early church organization in the Middle Ages, Münzkirchen formed its own original parish . Like the parish of St. Weihflorian , it consisted of areas that originally belonged to the parish of St. Severin in Passau's Innstadt . In 1182, St. Severin and the "Innbruckamt" responsible for the administration of the Inn Bridge were incorporated into the St. Aegidien Hospital in the city center . Since then, the “Innbruckamt” has also administered the parishes incorporated into the hospital, which were to be assigned by the respective “Bruck pastor”. In addition to St. Severin with Schardenberg and Wernstein , these included St. Weihflorian , Kellberg , Hauzenberg , Kopfing , Münzkirchen and Tettenweis .

Since the founding of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place was Bavarian until 1779 and came to Austria after the Treaty of Teschen with the Innviertel (then 'Innbaiern'). Briefly Bavarian again during the Napoleonic Wars , since 1814 it has finally belonged to Upper Austria.

After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.

On October 11, 1959, Münzkirchen was raised to a market town .

Population development

In 1991 the municipality had 2,522 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001 it had 2,573 inhabitants. From 2001 to 2011, emigration increased and could no longer be offset by the positive birth balance, so that the population fell to 2,556 and rose again to 2,572 by 2018.

Culture and sights

  • Parish church Münzkirchen : first documented mention in 1253, today's building, a three-aisled nave, divided by pillars, dates from the Baroque period. During the first fire in 1719, the tower dome, 4 bells, the tower clock and the church roof were also destroyed by flames. It is believed that in 1720 the city mason Josef Hertl and the city carpenter Andreas Höretzhuber were the masters of restoring the parish church. In 1729 the oratory was erected, the sacristy was enlarged and the altars were renovated. In 1761 a new, beautifully made, well-framed high altar was erected and a new pulpit was built in 1766. In the course of renovation work in 1961, Gothic frescoes were uncovered in the presbytery .
  • Filial and pilgrimage church of St. Sebastian: The filial church of St. Sebastian was built by the community in 1635 after surviving the plague : single-nave, five-bay and barrel vaulted with a semicircular apse, three altars and a pulpit. In 1729 the church was expanded. In the church you can admire the high altar with beautiful statues from 1635-1640, the tabernacle and pulpit from the 18th century and a Gothic crucifix from the 15th century. Since the relocation of the cemetery in 1973, the church has also been the cemetery church, but it is also used as a wedding church.
