Raab is a market town in Upper Austria in the district of Schärding in the Innviertel with 2268 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The community is located in the judicial district of Schärding .

geography

Raab is 381 m above sea level in the Innviertel. The extension is 7.9 km from north to south and 5 km from west to east. The total area is 22.5 km². 15.6% of the area is forested, 72% of the area is used for agriculture.

The coat of arms was awarded to Raab in 1813 by King Max Joseph of Bavaria at the same time as the market survey and confirmed by Emperor Franz I in 1830 . As a talking coat of arms , the raven symbolizes the place name in a folk etymological interpretation.

history

The place has been Bavarian since the founding of the Duchy of Bavaria , it was first mentioned in a document in 955. The parish church is dedicated to St. Michael and dates from the 12th century. The place itself was the seat of a Hofmark , whose owners since 1150 were the nobles von Rurippe-Reurippe, then the lords of Waldeck, the lords of Messenpeck, the bishops of Chiemsee , the barons of Neuhaus, the counts of Tattenbach , the lords of Wesen, the Lords of Aichberg and later Johann (Hans) Veit Graf von Maxlrain , the Reichersberg monastery and finally the Counts of Arco-Valley until 1849 . Raab came to Austria in 1779 after the Treaty of Teschen and the Innviertel (then Innbaiern ). During the Napoleonic Wars briefly royal Bavarian again , the place was raised to market on June 8, 1813 by King Max Josef of Bavaria. Since 1814 Raab has finally belonged to Austria ob der Enns .

After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.

Until the end of 2002, the community belonged to the Raab judicial district , after its dissolution it was assigned to the Schärding judicial district.

The town council of the market town has a total of 25 members. The 2015 municipal council elections resulted in the following distribution of mandates: 11 FPÖ, 9 ÖVP, 3 GRÜNE and 2 SPÖ.

Population development

In 1991 the community had 2,208 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001 it had 2,271 inhabitants. From 2001 to 2011 the birth balance was +71 and the migration balance -72, so that the population decreased to 2,270. It remained constant until 2018.

  • The three-day Inntöne Jazz Festival took place annually in the Rothuberhalle Raab . It has been taking place on Paul Zauner's farm since 2002, provided the weather permits an open-air event at Whitsun.
  • The big midsummer celebration takes place every year at the Raab campsite, whatever the weather. The 3rd Friday in June (solstice June 21st) is always chosen. In addition to the fire and sausages, music groups also perform, and there are games for children on the large camping meadow.
