St. Roman is a municipality in western Upper Austria with 1728 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). It belongs to the district of Schärding of the Innviertel and lies in the judicial district of Schärding .

geography

St. Roman is located at an altitude of 569 m on the southern flank of the Sauwald , whose southeastern peaks Großer Schefberg and Feichtberg are wholly or partly part of the municipality. Its extension is 7.8 km from north to south and 8.7 km from west to east. 38.1% of the municipal area of ​​31.8 km² is forested, while 57.2% is used for agriculture.

Blazon : Under a golden shield head, inside a green palm branch turned to the left, two silver tips in blue, each set with a silver, heraldic rose with a golden lug and golden sepals. The community colors are green-yellow.

history

Since the founding of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place was Bavarian until 1779 and came to Austria after the Treaty of Teschen with the Innviertel (then Innbaiern ). During the Napoleonic Wars it was briefly Bavarian again and since 1814 has finally belonged to Upper Austria.

After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.

The Kapsreiter group from Schärding operated a quarry in the village of Schnürberg .

The former Prackenberg castle was located in the district of the same name, fell into disrepair from the 18th century and was finally demolished in the 19th century.

The municipal council has a total of 19 members. With the municipal council and mayor elections in Upper Austria in 2015 , the municipal council has the following distribution: 8 UB (Independent Alliance for St. Roman), 7 ÖVP and 4 FPÖ.

Population development

In 1991 the municipality had 1,766 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001 it had 1,795 inhabitants. From 2001 to 2011 the positive birth balance decreased and could no longer compensate for the negative migration balance, so that the population fell to 1,754 in 2011 and to 1,711 in 2018.

Sports

  • Football club Union St. Roman: The football club started its first championship season in 1965/66 with the fighting team. You are currently playing in 1st class northwest of the Upper Austrian Football Association. The greatest success was the championship title in the 1st class Northwest in the 2011/2012 season and the directly related promotion to the District League West.
