Johannes Schasching

Johannes Schasching SJ (born March 10, 1917 in St. Roman , Upper Austria ; † September 20, 2013 in Vienna ) was an Austrian Jesuit and social ethicist , university teacher and author .

He was regarded as the leading exponent of Catholic social teaching in Austria and, alongside Oswald von Nell-Breuning and Johannes Messner, one of the nestors of social teaching in German-speaking countries.

Life

Johannes Schasching was born in St. Roman im Innviertel in 1917 as the son of a bricklayer. As a pupil he had attended the Jesuit high school in Freinberg in Linz and entered the Jesuit order after graduating from high school in 1937 . This was followed by a short study of philosophy at the Berchmanskolleg in Pullach . Then he was drafted into the Wehrmacht , but released in 1941. He completed his studies in philosophy in 1943. From 1943 to 1947 he studied theology in Innsbruck, Munich, Vienna, Chicago, New York and Leuven. On July 25, 1946, he was ordained a priest in Innsbruck . In 1947 he received his doctorate in political science in Innsbruck .

The theologian began his academic career in 1950. He initially taught ethics and social sciences at the University of Innsbruck. In 1952 he completed his habilitation there in special ethics and sociology and taught in Innsbruck until 1966. From 1961 to 1966 he was also appointed Provincial of the Jesuits in Austria.

In 1966 he was called to Rome by the general of the Jesuits in Rome , Pedro Arrupe , where he taught social sciences at the Pontifical Gregorian University . There he worked as a professor until 1991 . From 1982 to 1989 he was Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. From 1966 to 1969 he was also rector of the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe .

After his retirement in 1991 he worked at the Catholic Social Academy of Austria until 2005. In Austria Schasching was essentially involved in the social shepherd letter of the Catholic bishops in 1990 and in the steering group of the Ecumenical Social Word (2003).

During this time he first moved to the Jesuit community in Vienna in 1991, and since 2009 he has lived in a nursing home run by the Borromean Sisters in Vienna. Here he died in September 2013 at the age of 97 and in the 77th year of his religious life. On October 1, 2013 Schasching was buried in the crypt of the Jesuit Church in Vienna .

Act
