Apart from a brief interruption in the course of the Second World War , the Passauer Jahrbuch looks back on almost a century of history.

Lower Bavarian monthly and local history sheets

The first forerunner of the Passauer Jahrbuch appeared as early as 1912: the so-called "Niederbayerische Monatsschrift. Journal for cultural and art history, regional and folklore of Lower Bavaria and neighboring areas, taking into account economic and transport issues." After the Inn and Salzach Association was founded in Braunau as a local study group for numerous regional associations in 1920 , it was decided to incorporate this monthly and use it as a publication organ. The previous Lower Bavarian monthly was published in 1921 under the title "Monthly for the East Bavarian border brands. Local history sheets of the Inn-Salzachgau, the Lower Bavarian-Upper Austrian Danube valley with the Mühlviertel , the Bavarian and Bohemian Forests ."

From East Bavarian to East Bavarian border marks

Two years later, in 1923, Max Heuwieser , among others, was given responsibility for this monthly. It was he who first considered writing "Ostba i ern" instead of "Ostba y ern" in order to distance oneself more clearly from the (current) geographical meaning and to make more reference to the historical significance. Ostbaiern stands for the far more extensive area of (Eastern) Bavaria , Upper Austria and the Czech Republic , i.e. for the region that was populated by the Baiern tribe . Eastern Bavaria, on the other hand, hardly corresponds to this - even according to today's understanding. The publishers agreed with Heuwieser's argument and in 1923 "Ostba i rische Grenzmarken" appeared for the first time - still as a monthly.

Monthly magazine of the institute and home bells

In 1926 these East Bavarian border stamps became the monthly publication of the Institute for East Bavarian Homeland Research until they were discontinued in 1930 as a result of the economic crisis . Heuwieser found a partial replacement as early as 1931 by working on the supplement to the Donau-Zeitung (which has existed since 1925), the "Niederbayrische Heimatglocken: Papers for local entertainment and teaching." Monthly for the East Bavarian border stamps - supplement to the Donau-Zeitung, Passau ”. This only succeeded until the end of 1935, when the connection between the institute and Heimatblocken was broken again.

East Bavarian border stamps and Passau yearbook

After that, the "East Bavarian border stamps" remained quiet for a long time, which was certainly not least due to the economic and political situation of the 1930s, the beginning of the Second World War and the death of Max Heuwieser in 1944. Only in 1957 succeeded Josef Oswald as the new head of the institute to revive the boundary markers. Financial reasons prevented the publication of a monthly publication, but Oswald continued the tradition of the former monthly "Die Ostbairische Grenzmarken" by simply creating a yearbook with the title "Ostbairische Grenzmarken: Passauer Jahrbuch für Geschichte, Kunst und Volkskunde". created. It existed under this name until 2005, when it was renamed "Passauer Jahrbuch: Contributions to the history and culture of Eastern Bavaria". The 60th volume will be published in 2018. "The yearbook [...] fulfills the task of being a publication organ of the historical broadcasting area of the old episcopal city of Passau , today as then . The constant echo that the East Bavarian border stamps have always found in historical science is a constant obligation."
