history

In 1140 today's place St. Marienkirchen is mentioned for the first time in a document from the monastery Passau-St.Nikola as sanctimarienchirchen , which indirectly indicates the existence of a Marienkirche. At the time of the early church organization in the Middle Ages, the area around St. Marienkirchen belonged to the original parish of St. Weihflorian . Like the Münzkirchen parish , this consisted of areas that had originally belonged to the St. Severin parish in Passau's Innstadt . St. Weihflorian was first designated as an independent parish in 1182 when it was incorporated into the Passau “Innbruckamt”, which was subordinate to the St. Aegidien Hospital in the city center. The parish of St. Weihflorian was very extensive: It lay between the area of activity of the original parish of St. Severin and that of the original parish of Münsteuer and included the area of today's parishes of Brunnenthal , Schärding , St. Florian am Inn , Suben , St. Marienkirchen and Eggerding , plus shares in today's parishes of Taufkirchen , Lambrechte and Rainbach . When the parish St. Weihflorian moved to Schärding in 1380 , the area around St. Marienkirchen became a branch of Schärding. In 1581 the previous branch vicariate of St. Marienkirchen (consisting of St. Marienkirchen, Eggerding and Mayrhof ) was raised to an independent parish by the Cathedral Chapter of Passau. In the course of the Josephine reforms in 1785, the area around Eggerding and Mayrhof was detached from the parish of St. Marienkirchen and raised to an independent parish, and in 1786 the parish of St. Marienkirchen was declared a princely patronage parish , and the large chapels in Dietrichshofen and Bodenhofen had to be closed and to be demolished later.

The Gothic church was built in the 15th century. From the 16th to the 19th century, the owners of Hackledt Castle ( Eggerding community ) and Hackenbuch Castle (St. Marienkirchen near Schärding) were buried in this church.

architecture

The wide-span, single - nave four-bay nave with half an eastern and half a western yoke has a ribbed vault . The slightly retracted three-bay, ribbed, vaulted choir with a three-eighth closure has richly stepped buttresses. The three-axis west gallery has two storeys, the basement is vaulted with mesh ribs. The Gothic west tower has a baroque eight-sided tower and an onion helmet with a lantern from 1714. The sacristy has a ribbed vault and a door with Gothic fittings.

Furnishing

Gallery with Metzler organ

The decor is neo-Gothic. It originally comprised the Marien Altar (1884), Joseph Altar (1885), pulpit (1886), Stations of the Cross and High Altar (by Ludwig Linzinger , consecrated in 1895). In the middle of the 20th century, all of these objects were removed again, except for the high altar. There is a crucifixion group above the present-day St. Mary's altar. The crucifix and Mary under the cross are from the Schwanthalerschule.

An epitaph for Wolf Hagkheleder (Wolfgang Friedrich I. von Hackledt), died 1615, shows a figural representation of the Assumption. There are figural gravestones and coat of arms gravestones of the Lords of Hackledt from the 17th and 18th centuries.

organ

In 1871 Franz Sales Ehrlich (1835–1883) from Braunau am Inn created a new organ for the parish church of St. Marienkirchen. It had 10 stops on a manual and pedal. In 1991 it was transferred to the Lambach cemetery church , while at the same time a new organ was built for the parish church of St. Marienkirchen by Andreas Metzler (* 1960) from Metzler Orgelbau (Dietikon / Switzerland). The Metzler organ from 1991 has 12 stops on a manual and pedal. The game action is mechanical, as is the stop action.
