Walter Frodl

Walter Frodl (born December 16, 1908 in Strasbourg ; † April 10, 1994 in Vienna ) was an Austrian art historian and monument conservator .

Life

Walter Frodl was born in Strasbourg in Alsace . In 1916 he came to Graz, then in 1919 to Carinthia . From 1926 he studied art history and classical archeology at the University of Graz , where he received his doctorate in 1930 under Hermann Egger . Then he was an unpaid volunteer at the state curator in Kärtnen, and in 1932 he began studying architecture in Graz. In 1933 he joined the NSDAP . In 1935 he became an employee of the Austrian Transport Office, Graz branch. From December 1936 he worked for the State Conservatory Office in Klagenfurt, and in 1938 he was appointed State Conservator for Carinthia. After the transfer of the museum in Museumgasse in Klagenfurt in 1942 to the property of the Reichsgau Carinthia, which gave the institution the status of a public institution, Frodl became the full-time director of the Gaumuseum. At the same time he remained a volunteer juggler conservator, with Erika Hanfstaengl being his assistant. At the end of 1942 he received his habilitation for art history and monument preservation at the University of Graz, where he was appointed lecturer in 1943. From autumn 1943 until the end of the war he was also the commissioner for the protection of art and monuments in the Adriatic Coastal Operation Zone .

In 1945 he was dismissed from the public service as a member of the NSDAP and his Venia legendi was revoked. In 1948 he returned to the Federal Monuments Office , from September 1948 he became the Styrian state curator; In 1949 he was re-admitted as a private lecturer at the University of Graz. From 1952 to 1970 he was head of the Institute for Austrian Art Research of the Federal Monuments Office in Vienna. In 1960 he was appointed full professor and head of the Institute for Art History and Monument Preservation at the Technical University in Vienna . From 1965 to 1970 he was President of the Austrian Federal Monuments Office. Walter Frodl published numerous specialist books, for example about Carinthian art sites, glass painting in Carinthia and about old views from Carinthia. The history of Austrian monument preservation also originated from his pen. He died in Vienna on April 10, 1994 at the age of 85.

He was married to the art historian Eva Frodl-Kraft (1916–2011).
