The State Museum of Carinthia is a cultural and natural science museum in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee .

history

The founding of the history association for Carinthia in 1844 is also considered to be the founding year of the state museum. In addition to scientific research and the establishment of a library, the association also organized a presentation of cultural-historical exhibits in the Klagenfurt country house . The Natural Science Association was founded four years later and set up a natural history museum on Kardinalplatz. Its exhibits were also housed in the country house from 1861.

The constantly growing collections of the two institutions soon caused space problems, so that from 1877 a commission started planning a new building. On April 24, 1879, the foundation stone was laid for the new building, which was built according to the plans of the Klagenfurt architect Gustav Gugitz and financed by an interest-free loan from the Kärntner Sparkasse . The palace-like museum building, built in the neo-renaissance style, was opened on July 10, 1884. Crown Prince Rudolf laid the keystone in the staircase , which is why the museum is also known as the “Rudolfinum”.

After 1922, those of the Carinthian Landsmannschaft were added to the folklore collections of the history association . After a re-establishment in 1925, the museum was continued under the name “Kärntner Heimatmuseum”. During the Second World War, the building was badly damaged by bombs. In the post-war period, it was rebuilt with state funds and the cultural and scientific display collections were reorganized. Both the building and the scientific staff were taken over by the state of Carinthia, and the collections were also transferred to the state by contractual regulation, which regulated the continued existence and the activities of the associations at the same time.
