history

The non-profit Sparkassenverein was founded as the 7th in Austria in 1835 in Klagenfurt. The "Kärntnerische Sparkasse", as the institute was called, saw its business activities essentially as a contribution to raising public welfare. On the one hand, low-income recipients should be given the opportunity to make provisions for times of need or old age, and on the other hand, the intention was to provide mortgage loans to finance fire-proof house roofs.

The rapid economic success of the first few years shows that this business model actually met the needs of large sections of the population. Until 1868, the Kärntner Sparkasse remained the only financial institution in the country that offered small savers the opportunity to accumulate savings. In addition, with the establishment of the old age savings bank in 1894, the offer was expanded: the savings bank contributed an interest subsidy to improve the “nest egg”.

In 1844, the charitable status of the savings banks in Austria was legally established and regulated in the “Sparcassenregulativ”. Although the founding statutes already provided for the distribution of funds for charitable purposes, the Kärntner Sparkasse joined the new statute.

A legal change that took place in 1848 made it possible to expand the business activities to other customer groups such as farmers and traders and contributed significantly to the growth of the institute. The generated surpluses made essential contributions to the development of scientific, cultural and social life in the province of Carinthia. Among other things, the financial means for the establishment of the Carinthian State Museum, the concert hall and numerous other social and educational institutions were provided by the Kärntner Sparkasse.

Shortly before the end of the Second World War, the savings bank building on Bahnhofstrasse was destroyed by a bomb. The safes and accounting documents were partly dug up from the basement by the few remaining employees with their bare hands and the Sparkasse's headquarters were relocated to the Klagenfurt building at Neuer Platz 14, which was purchased in 1928, in order to ensure "emergency supplies". In the short term, consideration was even given to liquidating the savings bank. The young Sparkasse director Gustav Gfrerer, together with the few employees, ensured a fresh start.

In 1947 the name was changed to the company name "Kärntner Sparkasse". With the takeover of the first branch in Spittal an der Drau in 1930, the Sparkasse had started to expand beyond Klagenfurt. In the 1950s, the company expanded to the entire Carinthian region: mergers with smaller municipal savings banks and the establishment of numerous new branches took place.

The Kärntner Sparkasse not only played a role as a driving force behind modern developments by promoting technical and social innovations - in-house setting a good example in many areas. In 1927, Kärntner Sparkasse was one of the first banking institutes in Austria to convert its entire savings business to booking machines. Even in the age of electronic data processing, the Kärntner Sparkasse proved to be a pioneer: in 1969, the house was the first financial institute in Carinthia to open its own data center.

New approaches were also taken in customer care: for the introduction of a product range especially for young people in 1983, the Kärntner Sparkasse was recognized by the Carinthian provincial government as a “particularly youth-friendly company”. Modern support tools such as the electronic financial check and successful training processes such as the N3 were developed in-house.

Modernizations and adjustments to legal and social framework conditions were carried out right through to the further development of the structure - in 1990 the savings bank association and operational banking business were separated, which were brought into an AG. On January 11, 1999, the Kärntner Sparkasse association founded the world's first private savings bank foundation. She took on the tasks of managing share ownership and promoting projects aimed at the common good.
