history

In 1828 the "Carinthian Music Association" was founded in Klagenfurt. The purpose of the association was the "expansion, improvement and refinement of the art of music". In the course of the turmoil of the revolution in 1848 , the association was dissolved. In 1874 it was re-established under the name "Musikverein für Kärnten". In 1900 the Kärntner Sparkasse built a “music hall building” - today's concert hall - and dedicated it to the music association. In 1932 the association's music school was elevated to the rank of conservatory and in 1934 it was granted public rights. In the course of the annexation to the German Reich in 1938, the conservatory was spun off in 1939 and the music association was incorporated into the cultural life of the Reichsgau Carinthia through a temporary administrator. After the Second World War , the association was reactivated and in 1947 music lessons were resumed in the west wing of the concert hall, which was partially destroyed by aerial bombs. In 1952, the concert hall, which was taken over and rebuilt by the Province of Carinthia, was opened with a ceremony by the Vienna Philharmonic under Clemens Krauss . In 1969 the music schools supervised by the association were merged in the "Kärntner Landesmusikschulwerk" and the office of the Carinthian regional government took over. Most recently, the music association increased its efforts to include jazz and film music in its program, as well as to promote young talents by founding a youth orchestra and through the organizational support of the annual International Kärntner Sparkasse Music Scholarship.
